Nothing. You were right about me. About my being a monster. [ He says it with no self loathing, no shame, and also... no honest belief. No, he's not saying it because he believes it. He's saying it just to say something at all.

Basically, he's being a flippant jerk.

It beats dredging up his true insecurities in the form of 1000 mommy and daddy issues. ]

[ Why does Rey want to be wrong about him? Why doesn’t she want to put him in a box and kick it until it’s small and broken? Maybe because she sees some part of herself in him. Who’s to say she wouldn’t have ended up like him? If Snoke has found her and turned her mind.

But at the same time, he had a family....and he tossed all of that away. ]

Instead, she takes a deep breath and counts to ten. ]

[ A long silence follows as he turns that word over in his mind. Please. It shouldn't mean anything to him, from anyone, least of all a scavenger girl who sliced his face open not too long ago.

But he knows there's so much more to her than that. And she... sees that there's more to him than a creature in a mask.

[ Another moment of silence on her end as she tries so hard not to start yelling again. His family....it’s a very sore subject for him. ]

[ That’s the only way she can continue this conversation. To ask what happened and what else Ren did. Had Poe egged him on? Not that it would’ve made a difference, but she is trying to look at the bigger picture...

And know if Ren looked into Poe’s mind again. ]

[ A sharp exhale. How to answer this question without saying too much? Whatever fascination he has with Rey, he won't bare his soul to her. Especially not when he's trying so hard to stamp it down in himself. ]

He sees her as a mother. [ He scoffs, as if it's preposterous. ] Did you know that?

[ That ought to be enough for her to understand. ]

[ There. He had looked into Poe’s mind. How else would he have known that? It’s not as though Poe would open up that easily about his family life.

Breathe, Rey tells herself. Breathe and don’t react in a harmful way. ]

No, I didn’t. [ A pause as she tries to find the right words...]

You said the same about Shan to me. [ And that hurts her to say out loud. ]

What did they do to make so upset? [ The question is asked softly, not in anger, not with sadness. She’s trying to keep those emotions at bay. ]

Why do you want to tear yourself away from everyone and be alone?

[ Still with the questions. How can he explain what it was like, to have parents who were legends? Larger than life, heroes of the Rebellion, the mother and father so many children across the galaxy would have coveted.

Nobody believes that they can be anything but perfect. That their failings could be small and mundane, but many, taking years to build up on each other.

He can't explain it, so he won't. Instead, he'll give her the easy answer, the biggest mistake they made. The one that Rey, if anyone, may understand. ]

They sent me away.

[ And there's so much more to the story than that. It's clear in the tone of his voice, that it's only scratching the surface. ]

[How can he throw away people who cared and loved him? Han had gone back for him. Whereas Rey....she waited, and waited. So many years and nights by herself. She doesn't know why she was left behind, or why such a promise was made...but it haunts her. In the back of her mind, it haunts her.]

[That...is something she can understand. Being sent somewhere else, being separated...and she wants to keep asking questions, but she doesn't want to test his patience and hang up on her. The fact that he answered at all and didn't yell back is a miracle.]

You were still sent away. [Spoken softly, just reiterating what he told her.]

You still shouldn't have harmed Poe. You can't...harm the people I care about.

[ He could tell her so much more about what getting sent to his uncle entailed, but thankfully, Rey moves past that. She understands some of it, at least. Though being sent away isn't the real source of his grievances with his parents, it's certainly a significant piece of the puzzle. Enough so that they can move on from the subject. ]

Fine. [ THERE. QUICK AND EASY. As if he doesn't have an explosive temper that gets the best of him time and time again. Really, he's just relieved there aren't any more prying questions to entertain. ] How many people are included in this ceasefire now?

[There's a lot for them to discuss. A lot for them to realize how similar they were. How they know the pains of loneliness and of being abandoned...but not today. Not right now.

But they're quick to move onto a different subject and Rey finds herself letting out a sigh.]

Everyone on this moon.

[Better than giving out a list of names for Ren to look over. Better than giving him insight to which relationship were stronger friends and others.]

All of us are on a ceasefire on this moon. And you want me to train with you, you have to uphold that.

[Beat.] I don't want to fight you.

[ On the one hand... he hadn't any intentions of going around wreaking havoc. His goal on this moon is-- and has always been-- to get off and return to his rightful place ASAP. This is a temporary stop, and with so many uncertainties in his path, he has little to gain from starting a war here.

Effectively, there had always been a ceasefire-- except where a few were concerned.

That being said, if he gives in to the questioning and the ultimatums this time and every time, things will rapidly tip in her favor. Agreeing to her terms so readily will only make him appear a pushover. So he just... shifts gears a bit. ]

Then don't. Haven't I shown already that I don't want to fight you, either?

[ Everyone from their world—minus Jyn and Cassian—wanted to go back ASAP. Thus far, they hadn’t found a way to do now. Now that list of people included Ren.

Why does he make things so difficult? Did he do it to annoy her or was this just in his nature. ]

By harming Poe, you’ve harmed me too. An attack on my friends is an attack on me. [ Just like if someone else from the Order was here and she stacked them, he might consider it an attack on him. ]

Also, if she attacked Hux, he'd probably laugh. Secretly. On the inside. ]

If I wanted to kill him, I'd have already done it.

[ SURE. ]

[ Her voice is harsh there, holding back from issuing a threat.]
